Conceived in India and practiced for over
5,000 years, the Sanskrit word ‘Ayurveda’ literally translates to, the
‘Science of
Life’. Despite being referred to as the world’s most ancient system of
health care, Ayurveda is much more
than a physical science or a system of healing.
It is better understood as a lifestyle which aims to guide
individuals, to live in harmony
both with their external environment and, more fundamentally their
essential selves.
Ayurveda identifies the human-being as a
microcosm of the macrocosm, the universe. In this philosophy, the
rhythm of a human life is intimately connected with the rhythm of
nature. When the individual is perfectly in tune with his/her natural
state of being, a flow of creative and vital energy is established
unifying the body, mind and spirit. Perfect health, longevity and a
harmonious life are but a few of the manifestations of such a state.
Ayurveda
teaches that the foundation of all material life can be identified in
terms of the elements; Earth, Ether/Space, Fire, Water and Wind. These
five elements hold the entire individual in stasis or equilibrium,
through the three principle dynamic forces or ‘doshas’:
Vaadha:
This force consists of Ether and Wind element which
governs all movement of the individual from micro to macro, within and
without.
Pittha: The fire element
alone governs the individual’s digestive forces right from food to
thought.

Kabha: The Earth and
Water elements come together to give the body its form as well as the
ability to bind and retain.
These energies exist in various
proportions within every human being. It is the particular combination
and extent to which one dosha predominates over the other doshas that
determines an individual’s body constitution.
All diseases, according to Ayurveda, are
triggered by disturbances in one's equilibrium. These disturbances may
be caused
by either external, internal, physical or psychological factors. All
Ayurvedic remedies, herbal supplements and treatments are devised to
address the disturbance and help the individual re-establish that
magical tri-dosha balance, particular to him or her.
